Anti Regulation Argument
As a United States citizen, I feel that day by day, our rights are being
taken away from us. In the aftermath of September 11th, we have less
personal freedoms than we have ever had before. And now, I receive word that
the US Congress is trying to effectively ban online gambling for its
citizens. My question is simply: what right does the government have in
telling me what I can do with my own hard-earned money?
First off, sure there are people that are addicted to gambling. But there
are people who are addicted to gambling that play nightly at land-based
casinos and in Las Vegas. If the government is "protecting" these people as
it claims, then how comes gambling in any form isn't outlawed? The answer is
simple: the government makes revenues from land-based casinos, and doesn't
make revenues when people play at offshore casinos. This is a question of
money for the US government, and nothing more.
Secondly, I get a little wary when I hear of the government stepping in to
police something. As I said earlier, haven't we lost enough of our freedoms
already post September 11th? Maybe it's the Libertarian in me, but I believe
that what we do in the privacy of our own home is nobody's business but our
own, and if we enjoy playing blackjack online, then so be it.
I believe the industry should be regulated, and not made illegal. Strict
guidelines should be put in place to make sure that minors aren't playing,
and that casinos aren't stealing money from its patrons. We should adopt a
British style strategy of regulation, and avoid prohibition at all costs.
American citizens enjoy dwindling freedoms in this day and age, and I would
have to see us lose another one.
